Basic safety measures 'can prevent home insurance claims'

UK homeowners can avoid making claims on their home insurance
policies by being more safety conscious, a leading home insurance
provider has claimed.
Legal & General's recent study of homeowners habits found that
50 per cent of respondents had never had their wiring looked, a
third had not examined the state of their plumbing and a quarter
were equally in the dark about their guttering.
Meanwhile, 50 per cent had never bothered to test their burglar
alarm, while ten per cent did not know whether their smoke alarm
was in good working order.
However, by ensuring that these low-effort checks are carried out,
homeowners can significantly cut the chance of their having to make
a claim for burglary and accidental damage, Elaine Parks, head of
technical services at the home insurance provider said.
She added: "Installing a burglar alarm, good quality locks and
security lighting or living in a neighbourhood watch area are all
good preventative measures to help keep our homes secure."
