Student towns 'a strong choice'

Opportunities are available for investors in student towns and
cities but such landlords must be aware of the negatives,
BuyAssociation has said.
A location highlighted by the company was Cambridge because it has
both a wealth of students and other industries, such as those in
the hi-tech sector.
Student properties are also a good idea, claimed property editor at
the organisation Paul Collins, because they are empty in the
summer, when repairs can be undertaken.
However, yields on these properties could be hit as "students
aren't the most affluent people", he noted, while maintenance will
be crucial.
But generally, such options should be considered, Mr Collins
remarked, because of the flexibility involved.
"You have the advantage that the property is only going to be
occupied for nine months of the year. You have that summer period
where it is going to be empty, so you can do repairs or lease it
out," he commented.
Knight Frank has in recent times suggested that "attractive" growth
possibilities are available in the student market.
