It happens every year – I cling on to the illusion that it is still late summer, and, as my verbena bonariensis, dahlias and other brave blooms continue to put out for me I can’t bear to cut them all back and begin the big autumn clear up. Thing is, you really should, probably this weekend before the clocks change and winter blows chill. Sort out your perennials leaving any seed heads for the birds, trim your lawns and crisp up the edging and start to scoop up the fallen leaves. You’ll feel good – I promise.
