I keep reading about how dahlias are having a huge renaissance after years of being considered old fashioned and ugly. As far as I am concerned dahlias have always been in style and, although they are in bloom from mid-summer, this is the time of year when they really are worth their weight in gold.

What’s so good about dahlias? Well, they come in a most fantastic range of shapes – 14 in fact, including: cactus, ball, pompom, single, anemone, peony.

Then there is colour – there is a dahlia available in practically any colour you desire.

Not to mention stripes, blends, blobs, splashes and dipped like the ones below.

Then there is size: both the overall plant height and the flowers themselves can vary from small and petite to tall and flashy, with huge blooms like dinner plates.

I am not sure they are meant to grow quite as tall as the ones above – but just goes to show, the sky’s the limit when it comes to dahlias. They are such a generous plant too – one tuber can be divided easily and, once they get going, they grow really well, blooming from around mid-summer until the first frosts, which hopefully won’t arrive until December.

And, best of all – they are fantastic cut flowers, joyful, exuberant and versatile, Why not plan to have some in your garden next year?
