GARDEN GURU: Where do you think this photo was taken – Nicaragua, New Caledonia?
Actually it’s the wonderful work of Will Giles in Norwich. The next few weeks will be the best time to visit exotic gardens like this. Some will be purist and contain truly tender plants but many just want to get the look and feel of the completely different plant palette associated with warmer climes. You can get the jungle look fairly easily with some hardy stalwarts like fatsia, phormium and cordylines and then fill with flowering plants with bold colours. Great Dixter has a joy of an exotic garden where you will see dahlias among the bananas. Fancy having a go? There is some really good advice available about ‘exotics’ for cool climates.
