Take a moment to guess, off the top of your head, the ten most common garden birds in Britain today. Here’s the official list, in no particular order, courtesy of the RSPB and their annual audit taken earlier this year:
House Sparrow; Starling; Blue Tit; Blackbird; Wood Pigeon; Gold Finch; Chaffinch; Great Tit; Long Tailed Tit and one more.

Gardeners do lots to help birds thrive but we could do more, especially for those, like the common Sparrow, which have more than halved in numbers over recent years. I remember them at one time being so numerous that they were a real nuisance – now I admire the little group of half a dozen I see in my garden.

The RSPB recommends feeding birds all year round but particularly in the cold winter months.

Birds like to feed at dawn and dusk and many of them prefer to snatch at a table and fly to a safe place to actually eat, so bear this in mind if you can.
