For some people hydrangeas look like part of the blue-rinse-and-perm style granny brigade – if you’re one of them, look again! Did you know there are six different families: Arborescens, which have huge football sized flowers; Aspera, which grow as tall as a small tree; Macrophylla, which come in a range of colours; Paniculata, with beautiful panicles of white flowers fading to pink; Quercifolia, with oak-leaf shaped leaves which turn flame coloured in autumn and delicate Serrata, which bears dainty leaves and lacecap flowers.
