Yesterday, the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced the creation of a new permanent pothole fund. Does this spell the end for the tiny, imaginative and rather subversive gardens made by Steve Wheen, the self-styled ‘Pothole Gardener? I really hope not – but anyway, why not take a leaf out of his book and create some magical little gardens yourself as Christmas presents? Use one of those ceramic plant pot saucers instead of a pothole and play with scale and unusual juxtaposition to create a world of whimsy – a great British tradition.
