For those of us who don’t have a greenhouse, or frankly can’t be bothered to raise seedlings in pots, this is an ideal way of feeling like a virtuous ‘real’ gardener who hasn’t bought into the instant gratification available at garden centres.

I like Sarah Raven’s website with clear photos and instructions on what you can sow this month and a one click way to buy the seeds. I might be tempted by the ‘Dark Cut Flower Mix’ with deep richly coloured flowers contrasting with sharp bright acid-green dill. The combination of these looks and smells glamorous in the garden and any vase. Just sow them straight in the ground from April to June and leave them to grow.
