It’s nearly summer and some people are worried that they won’t have a flowery mead to sit out and drink wine in. Is it too late to throw some seeds down and have an instant, low cost, low maintenance, very little-effort-all-round but beautiful result which will cheer our hearts people ask?

Well, you won’t have something like this, obviously, but the answer is  in two halves really. It is certainly not too late to sow summer flowering seeds but (and I have to sound a bit strict here) you will reap what you sow, so a bit of effort in preparing the ground will pay off.

Then, of course you will have to keep the cats off and give your seeds a bit of a gentle watering if nature isn’t doing that for you as it is today.

What can you grow? I recommend going to your local garden centre for advise but personally I love Sarah Raven’s site –  I have mentioned it before – which tells you what you can sow in each month and then offers the seeds for sale, easy peasy.

My pick this month would be her Cottage Garden Mixsarah raven cottage garden seeds

For those of us who like a jolly, bright mix of colours, sow this combination including zinnias, cosmos, malopes, and much more, lots of traditional cottage garden favourites which will flower together not just for weeks but months.

  • 6g of seed to cover 2.5m x 1m or equivalent area
  • Full soil preparation and sowing instructions will be sent out with this packet of seed.
  • Seed shaker contains 18g of seed mixed with 65g of buckwheat husks to aid even scattering. Covers an area of 7 square metres.

This is great for sowing into container pots, and perfect for cutting. Plus, bees and butterflies love it!
