Winter bedding time is here – if it’s not sorted already. I’m not a great fan of the trays and trays of cyclamen, pansies, violas primulas and polyanthus, which carpet the spaces left void in garden centres between Christmas trees and seasonal sundries. However, they certainly are a cheery lot, and do a great job keeping nature’s floral end up at this grey time of year. I have fallen for the charms of the delightful, Viola ‘Sorbet Yellow Frost’, but I will have to wait until summer 2016 before it becomes available.

Meanwhile whatever you choose make sure you buy enough to fill the space as plants will not grow very much at this time of year. And lastly – don’t expect too much of them – generally they will flower in milder spells but sensible will stay tucked away under really harsh conditions.
