Is your home going to be jam packed with house guests this Christmas? It is a bit of a problem for every household, no matter how large or small there seems to always be a time when one more bed is required. I have been looking into the subject for myself lately – here’s what I found.

The very cheapest way to go is something like the above – blocks of foam which unfold to make up a mattress, either in single or double size. You can use them as seating the rest of the time – pretty good in a child’s bedroom I reckon.

Prices start at around £60 for a single. The next step up is a more conventional looking sofa bed but these just click into position rather like butterfly wings.

This one is by Made.com and costs just under £200.

Handy – but be warned, although sold as doubles, they are very narrow.

John Lewis sell this ‘bed in a box’ for around £600. It can be used as a giant poof, coffee table or general seating but contains a fold out bed like this.

If it’s just a single for your child’s best friend or cousin something like this may work.

Pretty handy really, always ready – just slide out and use.

And the, of course, there are the proper, old fashioned. comfy sofa beds, like this one from Sofa.Com.

Prices start at £1,540. So, that’s it – my brief round up of the kind of thing on offer if you are looking for a Christmas spare bed. There’s always the option of making a ‘nest’ of sofa cushions on the floor – or ask your guest to bring and airbed or their own camping beds. It’s only for a few days, isn’t it? Which type would you choose to be At Home with?
