We will be turning a spot light on property every Friday from today, featuring some of our homes for sale, interesting news and advice as to how to get the best from your property. We start with manager, Amanda Walker’s, pick of our East Finchley crop, a fine, double-fronted house on Fortis Green, N2 –  priced at £1,700,000.

There’s something architecturally satisfying about a double-fronted house but they are not so common in London where space is at a premium. Many of our favourite streets were built as estate developments by Victorian and Edwardian builders with the vision to include trees and nice gardens. Fortis Green followed a similar pattern but grew more organically over time and its homes offer a variety of styles and sizes to choose from.
The 1815 map above shows Fortis Green as a farm track across what was then Hornsey Common. In this year the land accessed from the track was divided into long thin parcels and sold off. Building started soon after with two pretty, picturesque semi-detached cottages, Albion Lodge and Albion Cottage (in fact we still have sales details from when we first were asked to sell these properties – but that’s another post). In 1835 a well known architect, Anthony Salvin bought one of these plots and built two Italianate villas, one of which was called Springcroft.
Our house on Fortis Green is an end-of terrace and it adjoins Springcroft Avenue – a reminder of Salvin’s villa.

As you can see the area was farmland, woods and common and today, despite being a residential area, it still retains some of that bucolic feel with plenty of greenery around.  The sunny, south-facing garden of this house is a lovely space to relax in and has been made the most of by the addition of a modern kitchen with bi-fold doors inviting the outside in. Plus there’s a terrace large enough to arrange a set of outdoor furniture on, for summer days when the inside can spill out.

It is a good thing that homes change with the times and we live in a very different way to the people who built the house, however, the owners have achieved a happy balance between making this a modern home and respecting the period charm of the original building.
This sitting area has original style sash windows, lovely wood flooring and a very handsome fireplace, as has a second reception area. With four good size double bedrooms, plus a loft ripe for further development, subject to the usual consent, this is a home waiting for a new family to love it.
