Monday 16 January, also known as Blue Monday, is supposedly the most depressing day of the year. With flurries of snow outside as I write there is just one thing to do this weekend – cosy up in the dark with a bag of popcorn and a sackful of fantasy at the cinema.

La La Land is probably the perfect film for combating Blue Monday. It’s on pretty much everywhere:at the Phoenix all weekend; Crouch End Picture House; the Art House Crouch End and Vue Wood Green.

On Sunday the Phoenix is offering an 80s blockbuster  double bill : Romancing the Stone followed by Jewel of the Nile with a Q&A afterwards. Starts at 13.10.

but if happy is really not for you, how about Silence? Martin Scorsese’s latest tells the story of two Christian missionaries who face the ultimate test of faith when they travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor at a time when Christianity was outlawed and their presence forbidden. Be aware this film is likely to put you into a premature Blue Monday mood.

For all the respect that Mr. Scorsese’s film demands, and deserves, I couldn’t wait for “Silence” to be over. Wall Street Journal
