Local resident Maurice Collins has turned what was a chance hobby into a most fascinating, serious collection of gadgets dating from between the Great Exhibition of 1851 to the Festival of Britain in 1951.

In this youtube film Maurice talks about how it all started and demonstrates some of his favourite objects, from a tea-pouring device to a hair waxing machine, soon after he won Bid TV’s ‘Best British Collector Award’ in 2011. His collection also contains such curiosities as a prototype ‘satvav’ from 1920, a finger stretcher, a mechanical envelope sealer, a stepped piece of porcelain for tilting your soup plate and many other labour-saving devices.
