Officially founded in 1927, it’s roots go back to 1856 when money was needed to fund district nurses for those in need. Individuals were asked to open up their gardens for ‘a shilling a head’. In the first year 609 gardens raised over £8,000 to help fund the district nursing scheme. ngsIf you’re interested in showing your garden and featuring in the famous Yellow Book be prepared to have one of their very strict adjudicators cast their professional eye over your patch of green. yellowAlternatively why not pop in to a garden near you – it’s a great way to get to know local people and the cake is usually fab. Some garden owners are also offering the sensible option of early evening openings with a glass of wine!
